Modern day piracy is on the rise worldwide. One of the most dangerous sea passages and a vital trading route in the world is the Strait of Malakka, . These waters, as well as commercial shipping in the Red Sea, Africa's West Coast and many South American ports are experiencing an alarming increase in piracy. The number of victims is on the rise and the attacks are becoming more brutal. But still the damage to global business seems too insignificant for the international community to work together at fighting this problem. Many powerful states are inactive. A spokesperson for the International Transport Federation fears that the United States and Europe will only take the problem seriously once terrorists hijack an oil tanker.
